China Crisis

China Crisis is one of the most distinctive and sophisticated bands of the 80s new wave and synth‑pop era. Formed in Merseyside, England in 1979, the band blended smooth vocals, atmospheric synths, and thoughtful songwriting. Their sound is melodic, emotional, and instantly recognizable.

In 1985, China Crisis released Flaunt the Imperfection, their most successful album. It reached No. 9 in the UK, went Gold, and achieved Platinum status in New Zealand. Produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan, the album delivered hits like “Black Man Ray” and “King in a Catholic Style.”

Their fourth album, What Price Paradise (1986), continued their chart presence with singles such as “Arizona Sky.” It reached the UK, Australian, and Canadian charts. In 1989, they released Diary of a Hollow Horse, a critically praised album that showcased a more mature, polished sound.

China Crisis continued releasing music through the years, including later projects like Autumn in the Neighbourhood (2018) and anniversary editions highlighted in modern streaming catalogs. Their catalog remains a favorite among fans of melodic new wave and refined synth‑pop.
