INXS

INXS is one of the most dynamic and influential bands to emerge from Australia’s new wave and rock scene. Formed in Sydney in 1977, the group blended new wave, funk‑rock, and dance‑rock into a sleek, modern sound that carried them to global stardom. Fronted by the magnetic Michael Hutchence, INXS became known for their sharp grooves, soulful energy, and stadium‑ready hooks.

INXS released their self‑titled debut album, INXS in 1980. It reached No. 27 in Australia and earned Gold certification. Their second album, Underneath the Colours (1981), also went Gold and continued building their national momentum.

Their international breakthrough arrived with Shabooh Shoobah in 1982. The album hit No. 5 in Australia and went 2× Platinum, while also reaching the U.S. charts and earning Gold in America. In 1984, they released The Swing, which continued their rise with a more polished, dance‑driven sound.

INXS reached a new level with Listen Like Thieves (1985). The album topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and reached No. 11 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It marked their commercial breakthrough and set the stage for their biggest success.

In 1987, INXS released Kick, one of the most successful albums of the decade. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 20 million copies worldwide. The album produced four U.S. Top 10 singles, including “Need You Tonight,” “Devil Inside,” “New Sensation,” and “Never Tear Us Apart.”

The band continued their momentum into the 90s with albums like X (1990), Welcome to Wherever You Are (1992), and Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (1993). Their later work included Elegantly Wasted (1997) and Switch (2005), showcasing their evolution across changing musical eras.

Across 12 studio albums, 71 singles, and decades of touring, INXS built a legacy that spans genres and generations. Their blend of rock, funk, and new wave remains instantly recognizable and deeply influential.
